Salam.
I watched Netflix series : Tidying Up with Marie Kondo and very inspired by the method she introduced to encourage people to tidying up. It is practical and as I getting adult-er, I prefer not to waste my time locating things, arranging mess and do things that are more impactful in my life such as exercising, reading, socializing and etc.
I noticed the similar patterns on why at their age, with 'their' here referring to families involved in this Netflix series, they were still struggling with tidying up. Their age ranging between late 20s to 60s. Below are my observations :
1. Collector : The fun to collect items, monuments, shoes, clothes because it was part of their identity. As example, I love fashion and by everyone's logic, it would be so wrong for a fashion lover not to have huge collection of clothes.
2. No stop button : It was fun collecting items and see them stacked nicely, although stacked nicely was not always the case. How do we know how much is too much? Most of them realized that they were having trouble with their house not being a home when the boxes and stuff piling up until ceiling.
3. Relying on others to tidy up : It was too obvious during one of the episode in which a family of 4, young parent and 2 teenage kids, the whole responsibility of doing house chores were only shouldered by the mother. The kids and father/husband did not offer to help but it was also resulted from the mother/wife not trusting others to do house chores, it is either mother's way or the highway.
4. I cannot think straight so I just buy all : Some people take the easy way out at the first place due to inability to decide, which later this irresponsible decision resulted to pile of expired foods, unused makeup and unworn clothes.
5. Fear of letting go : There were sentimental items involved. Some need to go because they took too much space with just their mere existence but some of the owner unable to let go the items, so the items, they were just...there...for 30 years...collecting dust...
6. In denial : I thought I am doing okay, until all the items laid altogether in one area and then only realization hits - I do actually have a lot, maybe too much of items that no longer practical to my life in my house.
All in all, this show benefits me in inspiring me to become more responsible of my actions, decisions, purchase which subsequently will effect my quality of life hopefully all for the better.
